KAJOL

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Yesteryears' actress Tanuja may not have reached Mumbai's stellar skyline, as far as her popularity was concerned, but she had elegance, style and piquancy that very few actresses of her times possessed. It is that style, class and piquancy that sets apart daughter Kajol from the rest of her contemporaries. Born to the producer-actress duo of Shomu Mukherjee and Tanuja on August 5, 1975, Kajol grew up in an influential setting. Her father and uncles ruled in the arena of producing films and her mother, Tanuja, aunt Nutan and grandmother Shobhana Samarth were established actresses par excellence.
Her childhood, with sister Tanisha, was very normal and healthy. There was no dearth of happiness. 'We had toys, outings, studies, everything we could ask for' revealed the actress in an interview. Though in her growing up years she saw her parents split, it did not really affect her, she says.Kajol took up films more as a hobby pursuit than a career choice. Rooted firmly in a family of film people, Kajol has strong financial support. Therefore, the actress was fortunate to never having to compromise on the kind of films she wanted to do for the sake of money.
The pre-requisites of a Bollywood actress, like a light complexion, dancing abilities, a slim and slender silhouette, chiseled features, all this Kajol did not enjoy. But she was an individual who did not fear to voice her thoughts and opinions, had loads of confidence, and oozed talent.
Kajol stepped into filmdom with Rahul Rawaail as her director and Kamal Sadaana as her co-star in a film titled Bekhudi. The film flopped but Kajol's draw continued to rise. Yeh Dillagi established her credentials as an actress. Her performance in the film made people sit up and notice the spontaneity and confidence she oozed. There was no looking back. Hits or flops, Kajol remained unaffected.
With every passing day her order rose and she became a star. She was probably the only star after Hema Malini who could carry an entire film on her shoulders, the only actress in the recent crop on whom distributors and producers could bank on for returns.
At the peak of her career, in her usual carefree approach to making decisions in life, she decided to tie the nuptial knot and move away from the camera for sometime. Not even once did the thought of the consequences marriage could mean to her career irk her. She was in love and wanted to marry. It was that simple.Kajol is back from her sabbatical and ready for work. But she is sure of one thing. That her schedules are going to be relaxed.
Remember she treats films as a leisure pursuit, not a medium for money. That she in any case has plenty. Plus there are hubby Ajay Devgan's production company, a dotcom enterprise and a distribution company. In future, Kajol will be seen in projects of her home production company and in a select few ventures from outside. One film of Kajol's that is being talked about a lot is Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's untitled film with Shah Rukh in the male lead.

SUSHMITA SEN

Sushmita was born in the Bengali-speaking Sen family on November 19, 1975 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her family consists of her dad, Shubeer, a former Indian Air Force Wing Commander; mom, Subhra, Jewelry Designer and owner of a Dubai-based store. She has two siblings, a sister named Neelam, who is married to Nauman Malik, and a brother named Rajeev. Subhra's dad was a poet.
She attended different schools in Jorhat, and Nagpur, but spend the majority of her schooling days in the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute and Air Force Silver School in Delhi. She was regarded as a tomboy and spent most of her times with boys. Since the schools were Hindi medium, she could not speak English until she was 16 years of age. She subsequently not only mastered English, but became an English Honors student, and also obtained a degree in Journalism. Due to her place of birth she can speak Urdu flawlessly.
Her first public appearance was at the Air Force Club Contest at the age of 15. She did a few fashion shows thereafter. Then during 1994 she decided to be a participant in Miss India beauty pageant, fully aware that she was being pitted against the reigning favorite, Aishwarya Rai. Sushmita took everyone by surprise when she was crowned Miss India while Aishwarya had to content with being the First Runner-up. Both beauties went on to win Miss Universe and Miss World titles respectively. Ironically the final outfit for Miss Universe for Sushmita was made by a little-known Meena Bazar tailor, and her mom.
It was during 1996 that she first appeared as herself in a Bollywood movie titled 'Dastak'. Though the movie did not fare too well, she was noticed and thus began her career on the silver screen. She has since then portrayed herself in a variety of characters and also some 'item' numbers.
Not considered a classic beauty and leading quite an unconventional lifestyle she ended up in many relationships but did not marry anyone. She wanted to be a mother and to adopt a baby girl, and name her Renee. Since she is single, she had to fight a Court battle before she could finally adopt Renee. Finally on 13 April 2000 she was given the go-ahead to adopt her, even though the family-owned business in Dubai was already re-named as 'Renee' quite ironically a year earlier on 13 April 1999

SHILPA SHETTY

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Hot Bollywood bombshell Shilpa Shetty was born on June 8, 1975 to Surendra and Sunanda Shetty in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka. Her mother Sunanda was a famous model during her time. Shilpa’s native language is Tulu and she can also fluently speak Hindi, Marathi, Gujrati, Tamil, French and English. She attended St Anthony Girls' High School in Chembur and then went to Podar College. She was the captain of the school baseball team and has earned a black belt in Karate. This tall and fit Bollywood actress also actively participates in social activities and is attached to various social organizations like PETA and Anti Aids campaign

Shilpa Shetty started off her career as a model and soon this tall dusky beauty caught the eye of the big Bollywood directors. It was not long before she got the big break in movies. Her first movie opposite Rahul Roy ‘Gaata Rahe Mera Dil’ never actually completed and was not released. Shilpa Shetty soon got a role in the movie Baazigar, opposite Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. Baazigar became a super hit and Shilpa earned a Filmfare nomination for Best New Comer of the year. Since then it was no looking back for this gorgeous actress. She can today be rated as one of the top actress in the Bollywood film industry. In 2000 Shilpa won the IIFA (International Indian Film Awards) award for the 'Best Actress'. In 2004 Shilpa earned lot of praise and received great reviews for the role of an HIV positive victim Tammana' in the movie ‘Phir Milenge’ opposite Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.

At the age of 31 years, Shilpa Shetty got an opportunity to be a part of the highly popular British Realty TV show 'Celebrity Big Brother'. Celebrity Big Brother 2007 was the fifth series of the United Kingdom reality television series Celebrity Big Brother, a spin-off of Big Brother. Shilpa Shetty was reportedly paid close to 1 million dollars to be a part of this show. She was also the first Indian origin participant of the show since its inception. Little did she stand a chance of winning this show when she first entered it and she was tipped to be one of the first housemates to be evicted. Other star housemates included Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd, Jack Tweed, Jermaine Jackson (brother of Michael Jackson), Dirk Benedict, Singer Ian "H" Watkins and former S Club 7 star Jo O'Meara. Bookmakers in UK gave her the lowest chance of winning the show.

Shilpa Shetty entered the show in a pink sari, designed by her close friend and famous fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani and walked out of it in red tunic with jeans. She was nominated to be evicted almost every week since she entered the show. The show created quite a stir in UK after Shilpa was reportedly subjected to racial bullying by fellow housemates. Racial comments ranged from calling her a "Paki" to digs at her cooking. Amidst all the controversy the viewership of the show shot to an all time high to over five million. Even the British and Indian governments were not happy with the racial nature of the show. Little did all this deter the graceful actress and against all odds and expectations she miraculously went on to win the show with an overwhelming 67 per cent majority. Shilpa walked out of the Big Brother's house amid fireworks and cheering crowds. She thanked them and said "Thank you, I love you. Chicken Curry rules." The graceful Indian actress received 100,000 Pounds for winning the show and instantly she gained international recognition and offers of all sorts have started pouring in from across the world. Shilpa described her experience in the show as a roller coaster ride. During the TV show Shilpa Shetty also won the hearts of British audience, who were overwhelmed by the grace and style of this amazing Indian film actress

BIPASHA BASU

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Bipasha Basu , born on January 7, 1979 is a Bollywood actress and a Supermodel. She is the winner of the Ford Supermodel of the World (contest) and now works in mainstream Bollywood films. Her first name means "Deep, dark desire." She is continually listed as one of Asia's sexiest women, along with fellow stars Mallika Sherawat and Aishwarya Rai.

Bipasha is the second of three daughters in her family. Her family consists of her mother, her father, her elder sister Bidisha, and her younger sister Bijoyeta . She was born in New Delhi. Later her family moved to Kolkata where she won regional beauty contest at a very young age. In an interview, she said that she had come into modeling and acting "quite by accident".

She had planned to learn chartered accountancy or study medicine. She said that she dropped the idea of doing medical studies because she fainted when attempting to dissect rats.As a child she was considered ugly because of her dark skin. Dino Morea was her long term boy friend(teenage years) untill she found John Abraham. She said in KBC - celebrity episode - that they started to date each other during the shooting of a movie called Aitbar.Basu dated Dino Morea before dumping him for her successful Jism co-star John Abraham. Abraham and Basu are now rumored to be engaged.

Even though Basu is a practicing Hindu and Abraham a Christian, both families have accepted the couple. Basu has stated in an interview that though she was raised a Hindu, she believes that "God is everywhere, in every religion". She also stated that all religious groups deserve respect. This Calcutta based commerce graduate model came into the limelight when she won the Ford's Supermodel of the World Contest and was named Tulips Ms Super Vivacious in the same event at the remarkably young age of 17.

Basu was then flown to New York by the Ford Company. She gushed in an interview, "I was spotted by the world famous photographer, Steven Meisel, and featured in Vogue magazine. I was thrilled and soon had plenty of projects coming my way." Bipasha could have had the world at her feet and easily gained acclaim as an international model, but she gave it all up to come back to India, to be with the people she loves. "Yeah, I did a lot of ads, but my heart was not in it. I started missing my family because it was the first time I was away from them. So I happily gave it all up and came down to India", she reminiscesd. This Bengali bombshell was bold enough to accept an unusual role in her debut film, Abbas Mustan's "Ajnabee", with Bobby Deol, Akshay Kumar & Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend. She was a household name much before she entered films. Besides doing innumerable prestigious ads, Bips, as her friends call her, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat and she also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.Of late, many Indian models have turned from modeling to acting; Bipasha has been one of the most successful model-turned-actresses.

Bipasha's debut film "Ajnabee"(2001) was fairly successful and she was soon signed for other movies. She attracted attention with her roles in "Raaz" (2002) and "Jism"(2003). Jism featured more mature content than had previously been customary in Bollywood; it was a success and Bipasha was afterwards marketed as a sex symbol. In 2005, she had a boundary-pushing role in the successful film "No Entry". She later appeared in the 2006 film "Phir Hera Pheri", which did well at the box office. Basu was the female lead in "Corporate", she received much acclaim for her performance. Dhoom 2 is her latest release with Yash Raj Films, which was a huge hit overseas and in India. Her role in "Omkara" was also critically acclaimed. She has also appeared in music videos, such as Tu Kab Ye Janegi... for Sonu Nigam’s album, Kismat and in Jay Sean's Stolen. On July 7, 2007 Bipasha co-hosted the new Seven Wonders of the World event along with two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley in Lisbon, Portugal.Bipasha claims that she was harassed by organizers of the controversial 2006 India Day Parade in Edison, New Jersey.Organizers are now saying that they will sue Bipasha for breach of contract for not participating in the event and alleging harassment.Actress Nidhi Gill of Bipasha-the Black Beauty sent Basu a legal notice complaining that Basu had made derogatory remarks about the movie when she had never even seen it.

KAREENA KAPOOR

Kareena Kapoor belongs to one of the most prestigious families in Bollywood. Her parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita Kapoor, along with charismatic sister, Karisma, are some of the few renowned members of her lineage. Kareena's assets include her versatile acting aptitude and ravishing features embodied in loads of confidence.

Never in the history of films has a star sibling risen to a status of a mega star in a short period of time as has Kareena Kapoor. Even as a 10-year-old, when Beboo (as she’s fondly called) tried on wigs and new shades of lipsticks in her sister Karisma’s make-up room, everyone knew that she would eventually join movies. But even her mother Babita, who has an iron hand over her daughters, could not foretell the extent of her success.

The first unconventional step she took was by signing Refugee immediately after rejecting Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. Minor differences led to her walking out of the project, and wisely so, since the film did nothing for its heroine Amisha Patel. Refugee was a perfect launch for Kareena, who with her ethereal looks managed to carve a niche for herself as a performing actress as opposed to a glamour doll.

The film did not do well but she was noticed. She had done Yaadein in opposite Hrithik, and Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham, Ashoka opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Mujhe Kuch Khena Hai opposite Tusshar Kapoor, then she has Sooraj Barjatya’s film, a love triangle with both Hrithik and Abhishek Bachchan. In 2003 Kareena's Chameli released in which her performance is being noticed. She got Stardust special award for Chameli.

Her spunk is what separates her from rest of the glam brigade. And beneath that translucent skin lies a hunger that a truckload of her fav. snicker bars can't satiate. She brushes aside her famine at the box office. She's supremely confident it will bow to her one day. She believes in herself strongly. She's certainly convinced a long line of filmmakers, fat pay packets in hand. Now all she needs is one blockbuster.

Her Aitraaz, Hulchul were hits and her perfomance in them where appreciated. 36 China Town is her recently released relesed film.

And Jab We MET was a super HIT.

KATRINA KAIF

Born on July 16, 1984 Katrina Kaif is one of eight siblings, all girls, from a mother who is a Caucasian of British Nationality, and a father who was formerly from Kashmir, India, but who has since acquired British citizenship.

Katrina grew up in Hawaii, but was brought up in London, UK. She started modeling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the tender age of 14, when she was approached for a jewelery campaign. Thereafter she continued modeling in London.Continuing to model was the reason she got her break in a Bollywood movie "Boom" offered by none other than film-maker Kaizad Gustad.

She was flooded with modeling assignments the minute she set her foot on Indian soil, especially with her innocent expressive face, hour-glass figure, and drop-dead gorgeous looks.Professionally she started off as a model with photographer Atul Kasbekar, and upon being accepted, she received offers from LG, Cola, Fevicol, Lakme, & Veet. It was the Lakme commercial that got her noticed. She retained Matrix as her Manager to accept work on her behalf and at the price she deserved.

Moving to different culture and country was not much of a culture shock for her, as she states that no matter where you come from, the bottom line is that everyone wants to be loved, respected, and cared for.Unlike other artistes from foreign lands, Katrina did not experience any difficulties in getting a visa nor of getting it extended in India.

Although linguistically challenged, Katrina puts on a bold face and states that other Bollywood artistes like Sridevi, who did not know Hindi, did get offers from Bollywood film-makers, and she is no different. She is taking Hindi and dancing lessons to fit in with the Bollywood culture. She likes to display a picture of her learning Kathak dancing where she used to dance 7 hours a day non-stop.Despite of her soft gorgeous looks, she is not easily intimidated, but admits that she is very emotional, almost an incurable romantic, wears comfortable non-revealing clothes when at home, hates to do her hair, and above all dislikes make-up.

Admitting to being lonely in the beginning, but now has several nice friends who she can hang out with.Although her first movie "Boom" was panned by the critics and shunned by the audiences, two other Telegu movies "Malliswari" and "Pidugu" did get her noticed. She grossed Rs.70 lakhs for Malliswari - making her top the list of the highest paid actresses during a South Indian movie debut.
